Midseason Baseball
I'm taking a look back
today at my predictions for the 2nd half of the
1999 season. The analysis is in bold
Perfect Game Baseball
We're at the halfway point of the '99 season.
While home runs aren't that big of deal anymore,
there are better divsion races. Is Pedro going to
win 30 games? Will Sammy Sosa hit 72? Is it
possible the Astros won't win the Central?
Will Pedro win 30?
Pedro Martinez is
the best pitcher in the league no doubt but will
he win 30 games? Probably not. He's got 15 wins
right now but he won't get 15 in the second half.
My guess: he'll end up with 26, the best in the
big leagues.
So I was right and wrong. Pedro didn't
get 30, but didn't get 26 either. He ended up
with 23 and won the Cy Young Award.
Sammy with
70? (or 60)
Sammy Sosa will
get nowhere near 72. But he will hit between 61-64.
I was nearly wrong here. Sosa had 55 and
looked as if he was going to challenge 70, but
then slumped. He ended up with 63.
Division
Races
There is really no
suspense here, especially in the AL Central where
the Indians will be the best team in the league,
but in the worst division in baseball. In the
East it will be the Yankees and the Rangers out
of the West with Boston getting the Wild Card
In the NL it will be Houston, San Fransisco, and
the Braves (and it won't even be close). In the
Wild Card it will be close with the Mets getting
to the postseason.
Again another prediction with mixed
results. I predicted all the playoff teams right
except for the Giants. In the NL East and Central
it actually was close, with the Central coming
down to the last day of the season.
World
Champs.
Here Houston will get to
the NLCS (finnally) along with the Braves. In the
AL it will be Cleveland vs. New York with
Cleveland winning. In the World Series Houston (yes,
Houston) will defeat Cleveland in 7 with Billy
Wagner being the difference. Jeff Bagwell will
hit 6 home runs during the series.
So I was extremely wrong. |
